BOTTLE UPCYCLING
Beyond the bottle
We know it can be hard to part with a treasured bottling from the SMWS, even after you’ve drained the last dram. So what could you do to keep the memory of a particular malt alive? Mads Schmoll explored some of the options…
TOBIAS PIWEK
I always figured my bottle of "Props for a Hammer film" (probably my fave SMWS moniker of all time) would look extra-cool with lots of wax dripping down from it – as if it had served as a candle holder in an old, gothic castle for ages. 👻
LYNN SMITH
We made some into a splashback in our loo. The SMWS one complements the Highland Soap Co bottles a treat.
ROBIN LAING
This lamp was made by Uwe Chormann from Einselthum. He runs the Whisky Palatina festival and this is a hobby of his.
HELEN STEWART
Our own head of brand Helen has a piece of Society history at home with this flattened bottle from a launch at Hotel du Vin back in 2010.
THE VAULTS
Our candles at The Vaults are made by Angels’ Share Glass and feature a handful of special bottles that we couldn’t quite bring ourselves to recycle. It's a great way to have them live on in The Vaults, says venue manager Gregor Forbes.
BATH STREET AND QUEEN STREET
Both our Glasgow Members’ Room on Bath Street and 28 Queen Street in Edinburgh have unique ways of displaying bottles.
GREVILLE STREET
A tree of Christmas past – an arrangement of bottles in our Members’ Room at 19 Greville Street in London in 2016.
SPIRIT AND WOOD
A decorative bottle made by @UK_nix for SMWS member Alistair of Spirit and Wood.
FETS WHISKY KITCHEN
Another take on the bottle pendant lamp from Fets Whisky Kitchen in Vancouver, BC.
DESSERT DISH
Desserts from a special whisky and desserts collaboration with chef Mark Greenaway in January 2015.
ROSS LYON
